VAT Basics - What Every Business Owner Needs to Know

If you run a business in the UK, you have probably heard of VAT (Value Added Tax). Knowing when to register, what the thresholds are and what your obligations include can feel overwhelming.

What Is VAT?

VAT is a tax charged on most goods and services in the UK. Businesses collect VAT on behalf of HMRC when they sell products or services, and they can also reclaim VAT paid on eligible expenses.

When Do You Need to Register?

The VAT registration threshold is currently £90,000. This means:

  • If your taxable turnover goes over this amount in a 12 month rolling period, you must register.

  • You may also choose to register voluntarily even if your turnover is below the threshold. Many businesses do this to reclaim VAT on expenses.

What Are Your Obligations Once Registered?

If your business is VAT registered, you will need to:registration

  • Charge VAT on applicable sales (usually 20% but reduced and zero rates apply to certain goods/services.

  • Keep digital records of your sales and purchases.

  • Submit VAT returns to HMRC, usually every quarter, under the Making Tax Digital rules.

  • Pay HMRC any VAT you owe or reclaim VAT if you have paid more than you have collected.

Why It Matters?

Understanding VAT is more than just compliance. It affects your cash flow, pricing and even how clients perceive your business. Getting it right from the start can save you time, money and stress.
